WHY ARE KRILL Are KRILL-IANT? They are one of the most abundant and successful animals alive. They can live for up to 10 years, pretty impressive for such a tiny creature, and when they swarm in summer they can be seen from space! They play a key part in the delicate Arctic food chain, feeing on marine algae and acting as a key food source for whales, penguins and seals. They also removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by eating carbon-rich algae near the surface of the water, and excreting it when they sink to lower, colder waters.

WHATS THE PROBLEM? Fishing techniques are changing, the increase in popularity of a suction fishing technique is accidentally hoovering up lots of krill! Climate change is thought to have lead to a retreat in krill’s main food source, algae, which may be behind the reported 80% decrease in krill since 1970.

Interestingly, studies have shown that Arctic krill are one of the only species of animal that can break down plastic. They ingest micro-plastic and break it down into nano-plastics in their gut. Although this may seem like a solution to the ocean plastic problem, it’s actually probably having a negative effect as the plastic will still not break down despite its smaller size…. Smaller plastic pieces are also more likely to be incorporated into the tissues of larger animals further up the food chain.
